WESTERN UNITED MINES OFFERS RARE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDENTS. June 2010

Interviews are currently being held to find 18 suitable graduates and undergraduates to help with the increased workload in a number of areas including geological and geothermal research, mining exploration, mineral rights conveyancing and archiving.

The students will work for eight weeks between July and September. Some will be directly involved with mining operations underground and on the surface, others will be looking at geothermal envelopes and heat transfer rates and the rest will be working on essential documentation, historical information and archives in both the mine and Cornwall Records Office, Truro.

Organisation of the search for ambitious top quality applicants has been co-ordinated through Exeter University's Camborne School of Mines via Step, the award-winning national work placement scheme.

Jane Gill, Employer Liaison Officer for the University of Exeter, said: "We are delighted that Western United Mines have got involved with the work placement scheme. It is a great opportunity for our students - particularly as it's right on the doorstep. Usually students have had to travel abroad for this type of opportunity. It has been very popular with lots of hopeful applicants."

WUM Mine Manager, Kevin Williams, said: "It will be a mutually beneficial arrangement. Clearly it will be a great help to have the extra staff but equally they will learn so much from taking their studies out of the classroom and into the real world."
