GOLD HUNTER STARTS WORK AT SOUTH CROFTY. 13 June 2010
Over the next three months Matthew Cross will be carrying out intense studies to get a greater understanding of gold mineralisation - not just at the mine in Pool but at other sites in the county owned by Western United Mines Limited.
Matthew said: "We know there is gold here, now it's about trying to establish exactly where the largest and most profitable deposits are."
The project will be part of Matthew's masters degree. He already has a BSc in Geology from Bristol University and is currently completing his MSc thesis at the Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter.
His research at WUM will include intense sample analysis, looking for patterns of gold mineralisation, underground mapping and analytical work using microscopes, electron microprobes and chemical analysis.
WUM's Chief Operations Officer, John Webster, said: "Historically Cornish miners have frequently found evidence of gold whilst searching for other minerals - principally copper and tin. This time it's different because we're searching specifically for gold and finding it.
"It's the first time this has happened in Cornwall and, judging by what we have already found, it promises to be an extremely lucrative and exciting project."
